As Western North Carolina continues to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Helene, the Grace in Action Fund is helping families by providing vital housing support. Launched this summer by Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in partnership with the Land of the Sky Association of REALTORS® (LOTSAR), the fund has already raised more than $180,000, thanks in part to community sponsors, including:
Moving Mountains Property Group
For Moving Mountains Property Group, the mission of keeping Western North Carolina families housed is deeply personal. “During several points in my childhood, my family didn’t have housing,” says Bonnie Gilbert, broker and principal. “We lived in our car and in tents.”
After Hurricane Helene, Moving Mountains volunteers mobilized across the region, connecting neighbors with resources and offering hands-on support. Team members donated supplies, organized drives, assisted with debris cleanup, and worked alongside LOTSAR to help residents access REALTOR® relief grants. They also distributed emergency supplies in hard-hit communities, such as Barnardsville.
In supporting the Grace in Action Fund, the firm continues its work of helping others find safety and stability.
“Shelter is a basic human need,” says Gilbert. “Everyone deserves the security of a home. We lost beloved friends to the storm, and in their honor, we’re motivated to preserve our community and keep our neighbors housed in WNC.”
GreyBeard Realty
GreyBeard Realty recognizes that housing is a cornerstone of community. “Providing a safe and stable home is a fundamental necessity, and the least we can do for folks in need throughout our region,” says Caleb Hofheins, a spokesperson for the company.
In the months following Helene, GreyBeard Rentals pivoted operations from vacation stays to housing more than 50 displaced residents and recovery workers. Team members also volunteered with Bounty & Soul, Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries, Appalachian Community Relief, and G5 Trail Collective.
“Community involvement is one of our core values at Greybeard,” says Hofheins. “From our brokers to our rental staff, a commitment to care for our community through our schools, local charities, and other organizations is a big part of who we are.”
Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty
Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty supports the Grace in Action Fund because “keeping people in safe, stable homes is foundational to a thriving community,” says Stephanie Sharp, a spokesperson for the company. “By contributing to rent, mortgage, and utility needs in Western North Carolina in the wake of Helene, we live out our commitment to community.”
That commitment was evident in the days immediately following the storm. Partnering with JAG Construction, Mosaic helped establish a drinking-water station in West Asheville after the city’s municipal system went down.
Together, the two companies converted on-site wells from an active construction project into a public water source, later enhanced with a portable filtration system donated by Planet Water Foundation and Americares.
Roberts & Stevens, P.A.
In the months following Hurricane Helene, Roberts & Stevens, P.A., aided recovery efforts across Western North Carolina, directing resources to groups helping families affected by the storm.
“Roberts & Stevens contributed to our community’s recovery after Hurricane Helene by supporting local organizations on the front lines of relief, including area food banks, housing nonprofits, and other relief groups assisting our neighbors and families most impacted by the devastating floods in our region,” says Jeff Howell, principal.
That same commitment to community drives the firm’s support of the Grace in Action Fund. “We believe that everyone deserves the peace of mind of a safe and stable home,” Howell adds. “By supporting the Grace in Action Fund, we’re investing in our community’s well-being today and its resilience for the future.”
Canopy REALTOR® Association
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Canopy REALTOR® Association moved quickly to gather and distribute supplies to communities most affected by the storm. Through its advocacy, the association helped secure national dues waivers for more than 1,100 REALTORS® in hard-hit areas while also directing $200,000 in relief funding to organizations across the region.
“Canopy MLS is deeply committed to supporting communities in our service areas. We recognize that the effects of Hurricane Helene not only impacted people and communities, but also our REALTOR® family,” says Charisma Southerland, 2025 president of Canopy.
“Knowing that the community is still rebuilding,” Southerland continues, “we wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to support the Grace in Action Fund and their efforts to provide critical housing assistance to those of our neighbors in need.”
