5 Ways LOTSAR Has Helped WNC Since Hurricane Helene

When Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina, it didn’t just damage homes—it upended lives, strained local infrastructure, and exposed just how vulnerable our housing systems can be in the face of disaster. At the Land of the Sky Association of REALTORS® (LOTSAR), we knew it was time to step up.

Here are five key ways LOTSAR has supported WNC since the storm:

1. Delivering Immediate Relief Supplies

In the days following Helene, LOTSAR transformed its building into a hub for hope. REALTORS® from across the state sent truckloads of donated supplies—everything from bottled water and toiletries to cleaning products and tarps. Our staff and volunteers coordinated with local nonprofits to get these items into the hands of storm survivors quickly and efficiently.

2. Helping Secure $1.2 Million in Recovery Aid

LOTSAR members and staff played a vital role in connecting local homeowners and tenants with disaster recovery funds through the National Association of REALTORS® and NC REALTORS®. Thanks to these efforts, more than $1.2 million was distributed to families across our region. These funds helped cover repairs, replace lost belongings, and restore housing stability when it was needed most.

3. Sharing Trusted Resources and Rebuilding Guidance

In a time of confusion, accurate information was critical. LOTSAR stepped up by distributing reliable resources on state and federal disaster relief programs, offering guidance on navigating insurance claims, and providing updates on water testing. We also hosted forums on legal and regulatory issues affecting storm-damaged properties, equipping both REALTORS® and residents with the tools to move forward.

4. Supporting Temporary Housing Solutions

Recognizing the urgent need for shelter, LOTSAR partnered with a local affordable housing developer to provide temporary cottages for displaced families. These efforts ensured storm survivors had a safe place to land while long-term recovery efforts were underway.

5. Launching the Grace in Action Fund

In July, LOTSAR joined forces with Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville to launch the Grace in Action Fund, a long-term initiative focused on keeping WNC families housed. At the launch event, we proudly contributed $10,000 to help kickstart the campaign. With more than $85,000 raised so far, the fund provides direct rent, mortgage, and utility assistance to those still reeling in the wake of Helene.
